The Harrowing of Hell was the first comic story published in the Captain Britain and MI13 Annual in 2009.

The story followed into the upcoming comic story Vampire State, which featured various references to Merlin the Wise (introduced in The Neutron Knights), as well as Captain Britain's association with the figure, primarily referencing The Guns of Avalon, but also alluding to the events of A Rag, a Bone, a Hank of Hair.... The story's final panel depicted Doctor Doom bringing Meggan Braddock aboard Dracula's ship, which would be shown in Vampire State. It also featured references to various earlier crossovers, such as referencing Plokta, a character introduced in Hell Comes to Birmingham, as well as mentioning Meggan's previous encounters with Merlin and Roma.

The story additionally featured reference to the Doctor Who series as in-universe fiction which Meggan watched as a child.
