Roland of Brittany was an English mercenary. Along with his companions Samson and Ganelon, he posed as a Norman knight and came to Mummerset and sought to take the county and its castle for his own. Roland and his comrades took their names from The Song of Roland and he claimed to be descended from the Roland of the story. In 1199, he questioned Nyssa about Hubert, Earl of Mummerset. He short-circuited the Rutans. Upon meeting the Fifth Doctor, Roland's charade as a knight from Normandy was exposed. The Doctor likened it to introducing onself as Arthur and one's friends as Lancelot, Gawain and Galahad. (AUDIO: Castle of Fear)
