He and his friend Doc Holliday had several conflicts with Ike Clanton and his brothers Billy and Phineas Clanton.
When the First Doctor was mistaken for Holliday by the Clantons, Earp put him in jail for his safety. He and Bat Masterson later rescued Steven Taylor from the Clantons and arrested Phineas Clanton.
