Maximilian Hodgson, also known as Max, was a human murderer.

Biography[[edit] | [edit source]]

Maximilian Hodgson was born in the early 20th century to Henrietta Hodgson, an unmarried mother with whom he lived in various slums. After Henrietta died, Max came to hate her sister, Professor Margo Hodgson, whom he believed pushed his mother away due to the damage she could do to her academic career at the University of St Andrews. He decided to get revenge on her and murdered Henry Cuthbertson to take his identity and study at St Andrews, swapping Henry's choice of History for Mathematics.

Upon realising that Mr Patterson was looking into whether a murder had happened that night, Max killed him via food poisoning. He joined the Merfolk, of which Professor Hodgson was patron, and decided to kill Athena McDonnell when she claimed to have witnessed a murder on the cliffs. Inspired by books such as The Casebook of Orion Hood, he killed Athena and hid her body with a painted canvas before exploiting the fact that Aurek Kowalski was pretending not to be short-sighted, using him to corroborate his claim that he had seen Athena arrive at the castle at a later time.

Max developed a friendship with Adric and suggested that he might like to enrol at the university. He gave himself ptomaine poisoning to give himself the opportunity to remove the canvas and claimed that it was as a result of eating sandwiches made at Professor Hodgson's home, later hiding a dossier on her in Athena's room to make her look responsible for Athena's murder. The Doctor ultimately deduced that Max was responsible, but he committed suicide by jumping from the cliffs after assuring Adric that their relationship had not been a lie.
