- Botanist George Cranleigh is reported killed by hostile Indians while on an expedition in the Amazon. He has in fact been mutilated and had his tongue cut out, but is still alive. Returning to England, he is kept a prisoner by his mother in Cranleigh Hall. (DW: Black Orchid)
