City of Spires was the first part of Big Finish Productions' wholly original season for the Sixth Doctor in 2010. It was notable for being the first performed Doctor Who story which featured any incarnation of the Doctor reuniting with Jamie at a time after Jamie had his memories of the Doctor wiped by the Time Lords. As such, it was a sequel to The War Games.
Publisher's summary
Arriving in a hail of musket fire, the Doctor unexpectedly finds himself in the highlands of Scotland, where the ruthless Black Donald and his band of rebels are fighting the Redcoats. But the highland warriors no longer fight for the Jacobite cause and the English officers answer only to the mysterious Overlord. What has happened to Scotland and why are its moors littered with advanced, oil-pumping technology?
Reunited with his faithful companion Jamie McCrimmon, the Doctor must venture into the sinister City of Spires to find the answers. But standing in his way is the deadly Red Cap…

Notes
- This story was recorded on 12th and 13th October 2009
- Being the first in a trilogy, some of the story threads introduced are left unresolved at this stage.
- The Red Caps undergo a conversion process similar to that of the Cybermen. The end result, however, is not the same.
Continuity
- Jamie's memory of The Doctor, apart from their first adventure, was wiped by the Time Lords at the end of DW: The War Games.
- The events of The Highlanders and The War Games are mentioned, as are companions Ben and Polly.
- The "Phantom Piper" Jamie thought he saw in The Moonbase is mentioned.
- The Doctor states that the Battle of Culloden was in 1745. In actuality, it took place on 16th April 1746. The same mistake was made in The Highlanders 43 years earlier.
- The Doctor informs Jamie that "the assembled hoardes of Genghis Khan couldn't open the TARDIS", much as the the Ninth Doctor told Rose Tyler in Rose.
- The Doctor says he thought Jamie was dead, possibly a reference to DWM: The World Shapers.
Timeline
- City of Spires occurs after DW: The War Games for Jamie, and BFA: Blue Forgotten Planet for the Doctor.
- City of Spires occurs before CC: Night's Black Agents
