A containment vortex was a device which confined a prisoner in a forcefield. It also drained energy from any energy weapons. Mr Smith possessed a containment vortex which he used on Mrs Wormwood (SJA: Enemy of the Bane) and Androvax. (SJA: The Vault of Secrets) He attempted to use it on the Qetesh, "Ruby White", but she drained the vortex's energy instead. (SJA: Goodbye, Sarah Jane Smith)
Davros possessed a similar technology aboard the Dalek Crucible which he used against the Doctor and the "Children of Time". (DW: Journey's End)
Another type of cantainment Vortex was used to stop the Eleventh Doctor and his friends to enter the TARDIS, although River Song called it a Force field.
