Black Holes were holes in space typically created when a supergiant star collapsed in on itself. It was a place where gravity was so great that nothing, not even light, could escape its pull.
Black Holes and Time Lords

Omega and Rassilon destroyed the star Qqaba (DWM: Star Death)to produce an energy source powerful enough to enable time travel. Artificial Black Holes
