The Alliance was a group of aliens lead by the Fifth Doctor as the Supremo in a war against Morbius.

History

When the Fifth Doctor informed the Time Lords- his visit slightly complicated by the fact that he was visiting the Gallifrey of his personal past at a point when he was still on the run- that Morbius was launching a plan of galactic conquest, he proposed that Morbius be defeated by a military campaign, as the best means of undermining Morbius's authority without resorting to more desperate measures such as killing Morbius in the past. The Doctor was selected as the only viable candidate with the tactical and species experience capable of bringing together the many varied military species who could oppose Morbius's army.

Using his experience of other races- and with the Time Lords funding his army-, the Doctor was able to recruit the Sontarans and the Draconians to his army- slightly aided by staged attacks on Sontaran and Draconian forces by the Time Lords that gave the impression that Morbius was already attacking these races-, subsequently mounting a plan of counter-attack against Morbius. Lacking the numbers to attack Morbius directly or stage various diversionary attacks to keep him distracted, the Doctor instead proposed that they re-trace Morbius's path of conquest, re-taking planets that he had previously conquered and adding those planets' strength to their own while weakening Morbius's position. While campaigning against Morbius, the Alliance was also joined by Ice Warriors, Cybermen, and a squad of Ogrons, the Doctor appointing the Ogrons as his personal bodyguards- the Ogrons naming him 'Supremo' as they couldn't pronounce his full title of Supreme Co-Ordinator- to escape the jealousy that might have arisen if he had selected bodyguards from any of the other races in the Alliance.

This plan continued until the Doctor's forces retook the planet Sylvana- which was the current temporary residence of his companion Peri, who had been separated from him before Morbius launched his campaign of conquest-, this last defeat prompting Morbius to halt his expansion and entrench his position on Karn for the final battle so that Morbius could claim the Elixir of the Sisters of the Flame. The mixed nature of the Alliance forces against Morbius's purely human army gave them a significant psychological advantage, and although Morbius tried to defeat the Alliance by recalling his still-dispersed forces to Karn to mount a final assault, the Doctor was able to summon back-up from some of the planets he'd saved, the resulting battle culminating in the destruction of Morbius's army and his own capture.

Although some Time Lords suggested that the Doctor use the Alliance to establish his own power over Gallifrey, after the wounds of his men had been treated, and the funeral of Battle-Major Streg had taken place- a unique break from traditional Sontaran custom at the request of the Supremo himself in acknowledgement of Streg's sacrifice during the battle to save his life-, the Alliance disbanded after the Doctor's departure, each species returning to their own empires.
