The Sontarans last appeared in Doctor who in two parter The Sontaran Stratagem and The Poison Sky.
The Time Warrior was the first episode to introduce Sarah Jane and the Sontarans. There was also an appearance with the Brig in that episode but with no proper interaction with the Sontaran.

Story notes

The title 'The Last Sontaran' was learned when the Penguin Books website revealed the first two of their Sarah Jane Adventures Series 2 novelisations. The information has since been removed from their website.

Rumours

The symbol on the collar of the Sontaran shown in the trailer is similar to the one on Staals collar. This could mean that he survived the destruction of the Tenth Sontaran Battle Fleet, therefore being 'The Last Sontaran'. The Sontaran that features in this episode is identical to Staal. The Sontaran is similar to Staal but the collar suggests that it ia a Commander as it is the same collar as Commander Skorr.
Sarah Jane has nightmares about Davros and is convinced he survived the destruction in the Medusa Cascade. It is unlikely that Davros did in fact die in DW:Journey's End so this may forshadow his return at some point in the main series.
The Brig is in this episode. This maybe confusion between this episode and the series finale as the Sontaran is in the series finale along with Mrs Wormwood and the Brig.

Sontaran stories

For the purposes of this list, a "Sontaran story" is one in which one living, authentic Sontaran plays a part within the confines of the story, outside of flashbacks to previous stories and cliffhangers that lead into the following story. For this reason, stories such as The Halloween Apocalypse and Survivors of the Flux are not counted due to the Sontarans' appearance being defined by their importance to following stories. Stories like The End of Time and The Time of the Doctor are also not included due to the Sontarans' appearance being no consequence to the plot of the story. Stories featuring Strax of the Paternoster Gang are only included on the Paternoster Gang story template.
