Behind the Scenes
- Prior to this announcement, there were reports circulating that the character of Amy Pond would be an alien and that the actress would be covered in prosthetic makeup. In fact, this was simply a joke blog entry posted by the Doctor Who Information Network, based in Canada. [3]
- Details about Amy's character and background have yet to be revealed. Photographs published in the media during filming of the character's first episode show her wearing some form of police uniform (whether this is an actual police uniform or a costume is unknown).[4] The first official preview of Series 5 issued by the BBC shows Amy chasing after the Doctor wearing the police uniform described above. There is also a quick shot that shows Amy kissing the Doctor. The Sun newspaper reported that Amy will be a kissogram, and that the police uniform is a costume as part of that job. [5]
- Amy is the second consecutive TV companion to have red hair. This fact was noted by the BBC when it issued a statement in response to the so-called 'Ginger controversy' that erupted in early January 2010 due to misinterpretation of a statement made by the Eleventh Doctor after his regeneration.[6]
- Amy Pond is the second character with an aquatic-sounding name to be created by showrunner Steven Moffat following River Song.
- Recent press reviews of "The Eleventh Hour" have revealed that Amy is an orphan [5] and that she has a crush on the Doctor [6] .
- A recently released clip from The Eleventh Hour shows the Doctor's first meeting with Amy in the 1990s, when she is a eight-year-old girl (played by Caitlin Blackwood). The TARDIS crashes outside her house, and the Doctor says he will need to make a "five-minute jump into the future" in order to fix it. Amy asks if she can come, too, but he tells her to wait, saying that she can come along when he returns in five minutes. Presumably, he winds up in 2010 instead, meeting Amy as an adult.
