In the Unbound Universe, Marcus was an overly patriotic Englishman who lived Hong Kong in 1997. He was a heavy drinker who was prone to racist comments, though he denied being racist when confronted about it. He also had an interest in Stahlman's gas.

On the day of the Hong Kong handover, Marcus' comments got him and Adam kicked out of a local pub, the two retreating to the Little England after they met the Doctor whom they welcomed to Hong Kong, Marcus giving him enough money to order something, noting that the currency would be worthless in a day's time. When closing time came, a drunk Marcus called a taxi only to offend the driver with his comments. Dumped on a bench in the Caroline Hill neighbourhood, Marcus spent the day passed out. When he awoke, not long before midnight, he used a payphone to call Adam for a ride, unaware that his friend had been killed by the Master. After making another call, he noticed the Doctor and several monks in the tourist bus of the nearby temple. Marcus attempted to flag them down but the bus continued on without seeing him, prompting him to curse the Buddhists. (AUDIO: Sympathy for the Devil)
