- Charles II accepts the throne of England after the dissolution of the Commonwealth Republic. During Charles' reign the Doctor meets Dr. Pepys, prevents a group of Tereleptils from exterminating humanity with augmented plague, and gets blamed for causing the Great Fire of London ("Planet of the Spiders," "Robot," "The Visitation," "The Republican's Story").
- The Royal Society, to which John Wallace will give a paper on sympathetic vibration, is founded ("The Happiness Patrol").
