Charlotte Pollard

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

Charley Pollard was a female Human companion of the Eighth Doctor.

She was born on 15th April 1912 into a well-to-do family; her mother was Lady Louisa Pollard and she had two sisters, Margaret and Cecelia. Charley and her siblings grew up in a manor house in Hampshire, looked after by servants. Charley rebelled against this existence and, styling herself an Edwardian adventuress, ran away from home seeking excitement. Making an appointment to meet a young man in Singapore on New Year's Day 1931, she stowed away on board the R101 disguised as a male member of the crew. There, she met the Doctor and together they discovered the secret mission the airship was on. She was rescued from the fated crash of the R101 by the Doctor and taken on board the TARDIS as his newest companion.

Behind the scenes

  • Counting audio and televised adventures together, Charlie is one of the longest-serving companions. She easily has more total stories than Jamie, Tegan or Sarah Jane. Taking into account the generally longer episode count of the Second Doctor's era, she has a roughly equal amount of recorded time as Jamie. As of 2007, only Peri clearly outpaces her both in terms of number of stories and recorded hours of travel with the Doctor. Ace is another close rival, who does outstrip Charley in terms of total number of adventures, but — owing to the shorter number of episodes per televised adventure — currently lags behind Charley in terms of total recorded time. However, now that her adventures in the TARDIS are ostensibly over, Charley could potentially be eclipsed by Nyssa and/or Ace by 2010. Sarah Jane, too, has more recorded time as a character, but not as a companion of the Doctor.
