Rex Matheson
Rex Matheson was a CIA agent in the 21st century.
Biography
Matheson was talking with his colleague Esther Drummond on the phone when he was involved in a car crash, a pole from a nearby truck pierced his body.
Matheson later awoke in a hospital and learnt that the pole should have killed him and began to look into Miracle Day, a phenomenon where no human on Earth could die.
Matheson's hunt for answers led him to Wales, where he sought out Gwen Cooper, a known member of the Torchwood Institute. Upon finding her, he collapsed due to his injuries and was taken as her prisoner.
Matheson freed himself and escaped with her, Rhys Williams and Jack Harkness as they were pursued by an armed helicopter. Following this he informed the police of the teams whereabouts and had them extradited to America. (TW: The New World)
Upon arrival at Heathrow airport, Matheson ordered for Jack and Gwen to be taken aboard his plane, but for Rhys and Anwen to be returned to Wales.
Once in flight, Matheson discovered that he had underestimated Torchwood, as Jack's knowledge of possible causes of the Miracle were better than any he had heard, and also discovered that his sodium levels were low, due to Jack's vortex manipulator scanning him.
Matheson then discovered that one of his fellow agents, Lyn Peterfield, had poisoned Jack against his orders, so he then joined Gwen in trying to find a cure, which was eventually successful.
Later upon landing back in America, Matheson was called by Esther Drummond, who informed him that the CIA had cleared out his office and turned on him. Realising his situation, Matheson chose to free Jack and Gwen and escape from the corrupt CIA agents, effectively become part of the Torchwood team. (TW: Rendition)
