- Herbert Wells' novel, "The Time Machine," inspired by his adventures with the Doctor and Peri Brown on Karfel, is first published. (DW: Timelash) He may also have had some inspiration from his friend Theophilus Tolliver. (TVC: The Eternal Present)
- According to some accounts, The Doctor may have been part of the orchestra during the first Proms concert in London, playing a tuba. (DW: Music of the Spheres; the canoncity of this fourth wall-breaking episode is uncertain)
