"The Waters of Mars" is an upcoming Doctor Who special which is due to air "around November-ish". Russel T Davies confirmed it on BBC Breakfast on 7 April 2009, when he came to talk about Planet of the Dead. As of mid-April 2009 a broadcast date has not yet been announced, however Davies said on BBC Breakfast that a "November-ish" date was being considered (previously it had been indicated the special wouldn't air until closer to Christmas 2009). The BBC did not confirm the broadcast date of Planet of the Dead until a week prior to its broadcast; therefore it is assumed a confirmed date for the broadcast of The Waters of Mars won't be made available until late in 2009.

- Russel T Davies has said in Doctor Who magazine that this will be a very scary episode of Doctor Who, as he described it "nightmarish". Therefore it may be be broadcast on Saturday 31st October, Halloween.
- Julie Gardner said on the Easter DW Confidential that another Your Song is Ending style reference will be made in this episode aswell as playing a massive part last 2 specials.

Rumours
- This story may feature the Ood.[source needed]
- More references to the Ice Warriors appearing by the companion Adelaide asking someone unknown at the start "State your name, rank, and intention," and with individual Ice Warriors having ranks this may tie into their appearance.
- This episode may feature a water-based villain as shown in the trailer.
- NOT a rumor, but a water creature on Mars, featured in a Ninth Doctor comic story, The Cruel Sea
- The episode appears to be set in some kind of bio-dome filled with vegetation.
- David Tennant has been spotted while filming wearing a space suit identical to that of "The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit" and similar to the one in "42" hinting that it takes places roughly in the same time period. Spotting of an Ood also supports this theory. [source needed]
- This story will likely be set on the planet Mars, as indicated by the title.
- The cloister bell is heard ringing in the teaser; it's unclear if it will be heard in the story or is just used as part of the teaser soundtrack.
- The Ice Warriors, the Sycorax and the Osirians have connections with Mars leading fans to belive one of these will return in this special.
- 'The Waters of Mars' is an anagram of 'Wars of The Master' or 'War of the Masters'
- In Planet of the Dead there is an advert inside the bus called Ocean Of Noise by E.R. Butler. This may have some significance.
- John Simm was spotted on set while this episode was in production. As Russel stated that The Water of Mars will be loosely connected to the Final two Specials, this could once more foreshadow the Master's return has he had a three part Episode like the Final three Specials of 2009. [source needed]
- More evidence that the Master may return is that, starting with the Fourth Doctor, the Master had always been around when he Regenerated in a Pattern. When the Fourth Doctor regenerated, The Master was in the Episode. Three Doctors later, The Seventh Doctor regenerated, and the Master was present in the TV Movie. And now, Three more Doctors later, The Master may appear, and it will then signal the Regeneration of Matt Smith[source needed]
- The Reference to "he will knock 4 times" could refer to the drum beat the Master hears in his head.
- Also, the title of the episode is an anagram for 'The Masters of War'. The Ice Warriors as the name suggests, were a very warlike people.
- Another reason as to why the Master may return is on the side of the Planet of the Dead (TV story) bus is an advert for the phone company neon, and the master had a phone company last time he appeared.
- The Beserkers may appear as the eyes of the water creature appear similar to those of a Berserker.
- Furthermore, another anagram is The Master of Wars. The Master had said himself that the Timelords only resurrected him because he would be the perfect warrior for a Time War.
