East Germany a nation, part of the Soviet Union opposing the rest of the former Allies and West Germany, created by the seperation of Germany following the Second World War. During the Cold War, a barrier known as the Berlin Wall separated West Berlin from East Berlin and East Germany as a whole. East Germany would cease to exist when democratic uprisings in the Eastern Bloc countries resulted in the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989 as well as the reunification of Germany.
