First announcement of the character

The character's full name was announced by the BBC on 20th July 2009, despite several media outlets already having given her name as Amy ahead of time, though not her surname.

Rumors

• Fan speculation has generated doubt as to whether or not Amy Pond is the character's real name. Alex Kingston, who played River Song has been confirmed to be a guest star in series 5, but the name of her character has not been announced. This has fans believing Amy Pond may actually be a young River Song and Alex Kingston plays her mother.
• Prior to the announcement, there were fan rumors that the next companion may be a Time Lady.

Practical joke

Prior to this announcement, there were reports circulating that the character of Amy Pond would be an alien and that the actress would be covered in prosthetic makeup. In fact, this was simply a joke blog entry posted by the Doctor Who Information Network, based in Canada

Costume

• Though all filming pictures show her in a red hoodie and blue sneakers, the first picture of Gillan in costume featured the colors reversed: a blue hoodie and red shoes. It is unknown if this is a costume variant that will be used in the show or not.
