Mr Smith was the librarian of the Great Houses' records library. He resembled the minotaur and wore a waistcoat and monocle. He was an extension and side-effect of the labyrinth which contained the library. He had no history beyond his existence in the library.

Mr Smith knew the contents and location of every book in the archive. He kept a personal collection of unmade Earth literature, including Rudyard Kipling's Days of Other Empires and Lewis Carroll's third Alice in Wonderland novel.

During the breakout at the Great Houses' prison-planet in the War in Heaven, Shuncucker set the records library ablaze and Mr Smith did nothing because he wasn't responsible for preventing vandalism. Cousin Justine met Mr Smith and the two initially fought, but, after Justine snapped one of his horns, Mr Smith talked her out of conflict. Mr Smith recognised Justine from mostly recent works added to the library, prominently the chapterhouse records of House Lolita, and brought her a coded book by Godfather Morlock. After she finished experiencing the book's effects, Mr Smith showed Justine the way out of the library. (AUDIO: A Labyrinth of Histories)

At the time of the Armistice, Mr Smith was walking through a section of the Labyrinth resembling an alleyway when he was passed by Nezf, Wade, Tabrenilsodvoravitas, and a Shift in a Plume Coteries diplomatic craft. (PROSE: A Farewell to Arms)

The Post-War Edition of the Primer for the Spiral Politic contained an entry on Mr Smith. (AUDIO: A Labyrinth of Histories)
