Betterment was the director of the Mindless Facility, creating Wellness treatments to stop people thinking negative thoughts. Elise Kaplan was one of his patients. He tried to analyse the Sixth Doctor and showed him his treatment. He forced the Doctor into the machine to create a better him. He wanted to use the machine on the Home Secretary. The Doctor with Melanie Bush's coding abilities destroyed the machine. He promised to return to take over people's minds.
