Cass was the sole remaining pilot of a gunship which crashed on the planet Karn.

Biography

With her ship on a crash course for Karn, Cass teleported the rest of its passengers to safety, as she was the only one not panicking. As she futilely tried to save the ship, the the Doctor, who had noticed the ship crashing, showed up in the control room and offered her a chance to run to safety. Cass ran with him to the back of the ship, explaining what had happened to the crew and telling him that it was her first time in space and that she'd wanted to see the universe. However, she balked when he tried to lead her into TARDIS. Horrified to find out the Doctor was a Time Lord, since she knew of the Last Great Time War and imagined all Time Lords to be corrupt, she refused to go with him. The Doctor tried to convince her otherwise, but she furiously locked herself outside of the room he and the TARDIS were in, making it impossible for him to save her. The Doctor pleaded with her to change her mind, saying that if she died with the ship he would die with her, but she retorted that that was the best news she'd heard all day, and defiantly turned away and held her ground as the ship crashed on Karn.

The Sisterhood of Karn retrieved the Doctor's body and brought him back to life, He gasped Cass's name as he woke, but Ohlia told him that nobody could have survived the crash. It took the Sisters a long time to extricate Cass from the wreckage. When they brought her body before the Doctor, he commented that if she were still alive, it was unlikely that she would even speak to him. Ohlia retorted that she would have wanted him to take an active part in ending the War. Before drinking the draught that would cause him to regenerate, he apologised to Cass for his part in her death. (TV: The Night of the Doctor)
