Kalem was the uncle of Mihal and Lycon.
Kalem killed King Loran of Zalezna in an attempt to make himself King. His nephews Mihal and Lycon witnessed the murder and Kalem chased them into the nearby woods with his soldiers. Kalem met the Doctor in the woods. The Doctor[which?] defended the children, using his sonic screwdriver to disarm Kalem's soldiers. Kalem stood trial for his crimes and Mihal was made King instead.
