The Magician's Apprentice was the first episode of the ninth series of Doctor Who produced by BBC Wales. It saw the return of Missy, the latest incarnation of renegade Time Lord/Lady the Master, after having been apparently killed by a Cyberman-converted Brigadier at the end of Death in Heaven, and also the return of Kate Stewart.

Synopsis

Where is the Doctor? When the skies of Earth are frozen by a mysterious alien force, Clara needs her friend. But where is the Doctor, and what is he hiding from?

As past deeds come back to haunt him, old enemies will come face-to-face, and for the Doctor and Clara survival seems impossible.

Plot

On a misty battle field, soldiers flee a bombing run. When the dust settles one of the soldiers notices a small figure running in the mist. His companion warns him they need to leave; that Kal drones will pass through the area to pick off those the bombing run missed.

The soldiers says he thinks he saw a child and he will catch up; running off in the same direction of the figure he saw. He soon catches up to the figure; a boy and tells him to stop. The boy; dressed in the same uniform has the soldier turns fearfully and the soldiers asks him if he is lost. The boy nods fearfully has the earth beneath them rumbles and something appears to be tunneling underneath it. The soldier warns the boy to be still and quite; taking out a scanner. He tells the child its a Handmine field; he will be ok so long as he remains still and quite.

Pulling out some tools he tries to keep the child calm; asking if he has ever seen a Handmine before. The boy nods, pointing to the man's leg; a muddy hand has clamped onto the soldier's ankle. As he looks upon it in fear and back to the boy the Handmine pulls the soldier down, creating a gaping hole that closes afterwards.
