- While main character David Taylor and his family originate from Paul Magrs' novel The Diary of a Dr Who Addict, details of their lives are altered for Imaginary Boys. The Diary of a Dr Who Addict has David as a 12 year old boy in 1982; in Imaginary Boys, David is 17 in 2013. Imaginary Boys replaces David's love of Doctor Who with a love for science fiction books and stories in general.
