Earlier in his life, this Time Lord was also known as the Hermit (TV: The Time Monster, et al.) and Ansillon. (AUDIO: Blood of the Time Lords)

Biography

K'anpo served as the abbot of a Buddhist meditation centre in England with his assistant Cho-Je, a projection of his next incarnation, presumably due to his own infirmity. K'anpo showed the mentally disabled Tommy compassion, leading to him considering the abbot a friend. When the Eight Legs infiltrated his centre, Tommy gave him the Doctor's Metebelis crystal.

The Third Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith met K'anpo at the meditation centre when the Eight Legs infiltrated his centre. Upon meeting him, the Doctor apologised to him in Tibetan for not bringing a cotton scarf as a ceremonial gift, not initially recognising his former mentor. The two discussed the blue crystal that the Doctor took from Metebelis III, and K'anpo suggested that they should give it to them, knowing it would be their undoing. He also realised that Sarah was possessed by Huath, and used the blue crystal to free her.

Afterwards, he indicated that the Doctor's misguided greed for knowledge is what caused this crisis, which led to the Doctor finally recognising him. After they caught up, K'anpo urged the Doctor face his fear and defeat the Great One. When the Eight Legs possessed students broke into the room K'anpo transported the Doctor to the cellar, and was struck down by them. He then regenerated into Cho-Je. (TV: Planet of the Spiders)
