El Alamein

El Alamein was the site of at least one infamous battle in World War II. (PROSE: Autumn Mist [+]Loading...["Autumn Mist (novel)"], Earthfall)

During his exile on Earth, the Third Doctor claimed to Robbins that he had been wounded in the leg in Crimea. He quickly changed his story to say it was Gallipoli, and then El Alamein, before questioning if it mattered. (TV: The Sea Devils (episode one) [+]Loading...{"ep":"one","1":"The Sea Devils (TV story)"}) The Fifth Doctor would go on to list El Alamein as one of the many battlefields he had walked through, (PROSE: The King of Terror [+]Loading...["The King of Terror (novel)"]) and indeed, when trapped in World War II once again, the Eighth Doctor was able to prevail on his identification number (John Smith 5583) from driving an ambulance at El Alamein for the Allies "several lifetimes ago". Major Daker claimed that traitors and cowards were executed at El Alamein. (PROSE: Ghosts of India)

Sam Bishop's great-grandfather fought in El Alamein in North Africa with the British Eighth Army in World War II. Following the war, he would regale the young Sam Bishop with war stories of his time there, inspiring him to eventually join UNIT. (AUDIO: Earthfall)
