Forum:Covering spin-offs of parodies

The Cloisters
IndexThe Panopticon → Covering spin-offs of parodies
Spoilers are strongly policed here.
If this thread's title doesn't specify it's spoilery, don't bring any up.
The title card of Sleigh What?!, which arguably should be covered here.

So we cover parodies - at least some, and only licensed ones, such as the Lenny Henry Show sketch [+]Loading...{"noital":"1","1":"Untitled (The Lenny Henry Show TV story)","2":"the ''Lenny Henry Show'' sketch"}, The Doctor's New Invention [+]Loading...["The Doctor's New Invention (TV story)"], or, in the most relevant case here, Doctor Doctor. We also cover other material as DWU spinoffs if they make licensed use of elements introduced in the DWU (e.g. Torchwood, Coloth, or Faction Paradox).

The question here is: what do we do if an element introduced in one of these parodies is spun off into further material? I believe, personally, that the answer is simple: we should cover it as we would any other spin-off, but as invalid so long as the parody it's spun off from is as well. We actually do have an example of this, which is the reason for my making this thread: Sleigh What?!, which, as noted under "Links to Doctor Doctor", makes use of the same fictional credits as Doctor Doctor, as well as mentioning AIEIO in one of its episodes. Assuming the credits debuted with Doctor Doctor (which began at the start of SMU! season 7), I'd argue that they can be considered part of the source (especially considering the highly meta nature of the sketches), thus making this series a spin-off, even putting aside the AIEIO reference. I do think it's best to get more opinions on this, however, before going too far with this. Cookieboy 2005 18:35, 23 December 2024 (UTC)

Discussion

In principle I would definitely agree that spin-offs of invalid-but-coveed sources are straightforwardly coverable. I would say the status of Sleigh What? itself is arguable for reasons completely unrelated to that question i.e. the fact that the series-wide licensed link of the made-up credited crewmembers only exists at the meta level and does not involve any of the in-universe elements of either series. --Scrooge MacDuck 19:33, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
