Colonel Manton was a human who led the Anglican Marines, a militaristic wing of The Church. He and Madame Kovarian conspired to kidnap Amy Pond and steal her baby. Manton possessed a strong hatred and fear of the Doctor and desired to kill him, but also underestimated how dangerous the Doctor was. When the Doctor finally appeared Manton was tricked into disarming his forces, and the Doctor's allies were able to defeat them in minutes. He was then brought before an enraged Doctor who cruelly forced Manton to order his army to - "run away" - from Demons Run, taunting him that he would be known as "Colonel Run-away" from then on. This was proven when Kovarian refered to him as such, and told him to give the order, the terrified Manton then did so. (DW: A Good Man Goes to War)
