History

19th century

California was settled in the 19th century around the San Andreas Fault, a geological flaw in the land mass. Many of the earthquakes that had plagued the region were attributable to the fault as the two tectonic plates that made up the fault moved northwards and southwards. 20th century

The Seventh Doctor regenerated into his eighth incarnation in San Francisco on 31 December 1999. (TV: Doctor Who)

21st century

In 2006, the First Doctor lost the TARDIS in a bet in Chicago. He and his companions Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright and Susan Foreman were forced to travel 2,500 miles down Route 66 in a purple Oldsmobile 88 (which the Doctor won in another bet) to California in order to retrieve it. Central California was among the places on Earth which received deliveries of Bubble Shock! from the Bubble Shock! factory in London. (TV: Invasion of the Bane)

In 2011, a female anchor reported that no deaths had been recorded over 24 hours "from Maine to California", in a phenomenon quickly dubbed as Miracle Day. (TV: The New World) Later that year, the Californian town of San Pedro contained an overflow camp that was investigated by Torchwood. (TV: The Categories of Life)

Dr Grace Holloway was a homeowner and practising heart surgeon in San Francisco at the start of the 21st century. (TV: Doctor Who)
