In the 1190s, (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Crusaders) Ben Daheer mistakenly suggested that the First Doctor came from Genoa. Luigi Ferrigo was a Genoese merchant during the Crusades. (TV: The Crusade)

Some time after 1289, Marco Polo was captured by the Genoese while trying to reach Venice. (PROSE: Marco Polo)
