Ismay was a general of the British Army. He served as Prime Minister Winston Churchill's Chief of Staff.
A memo from physicist R. V. Jones was addressed to Churchill and Ismay. In the memo, Jones wrote that Edwin Bracewell's "Ironsides" were "every bit impressive as we have been led to believe".
