Kan'rath was a P'tarr. He was in the P'tarr village when Leela arrived, telling him that another P'tarr, Trok'larr, and the Fourth Doctor had been attacked by a party of partially Cyberconverted humans. Kan'rath and nine P'tarr ate berries from the tik'ssotar trees to relearn the arts of war, and with Leela they attacked the humans' base. The Doctor called them off, but not before Abel had been wounded. (PROSE: One Bad Apple)
