Orkney, also known as the Orkney Islands, was an archipelago of Scotland. It was located off the north-east coast of the Scottish mainland. North-east of the Orkney Islands were the Shetland Islands. (TV: The Lie of the Land)

Orkney was taken over by Scotland in the 13th century, having previously been a Viking settlement.
In 1956, the TARDIS landed on Orkney. Ian and Barbara were left behind as the TARDIS disappeared before the Doctor exited. They found him later, where he was known as Wissfornjarl. Some force pulled the TARDIS back in time, and the Doctor remained, living in the same place for years until he was in the same time as Ian and Barbara. (AUDIO: The Revenants)
