Peter McKinstry was a concept artist/design assistant for Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. His first contribution to Doctor Who occurred in 2004, when he provided illustrations for the ebook version of The Sands of Time.

His involvement in the BBC Wales Doctor Who universe began with series 2 of the parent programme, and continued through the 2010 series. He designed things such as the Carrionites, the telescope and the Host's cage from Tooth and Claw, and the SS Madame de Pompadour and eye camera from The Girl in the Fireplace. Some of his drawings have actually appeared in finished episodes, including Edwin Bracewell's Ironside blueprints and the "Dalek Victory" poster in Victory of the Daleks. He is also responsible for the concept designs of the 2010 redesign of the Daleks.

Outside the television programme proper, he also provided the front cover illustrations for The Darksmith Legacy series, has done numerous cutaway illustrations for GE Fabbri's Doctor Who DVD Files magazines, and provided art for the books The Visual Dictionary and A History of the Universe in 100 Objects.

He was also inadvertently responsible for a widespread false rumour that the Robot Yeti were going to return to Doctor Who. McKinstry added some artwork of a Yeti that had been done for Doctor Who DVD Files to his website close to the end of series 5, prompting some fans to assume it meant the Yeti would appear in the 2010 Christmas special.[1]

He received some public exposure due to his work on Doctor Who. He was a participant to the DVD commentary for The Satan Pit, and made appearances on documentaries such as Designs on Doctor Who.

McKinstry later worked on the movie Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and its two-part sequel.
