Inspector Roger Gleave was a detective in Penton, England in the early 20th century. He was a veteran of World War I. One case that left a major impression on him was a murder-suicide in which a seemingly normal man suddenly killed his wife and children, then himself. He would later recall that "having witnessed the results of that incredible madness... I could believe anything after that."
At 3:00 in the morning on 28 August 1933, he was called to investigate a burglary in progress in the nearby village of Marpling. Upon arriving, he arrested the Eighth Doctor, Anji Kapoor, and Fitz Kreiner, both for the burglary and for the murder of Hilary Pink, who was found dead at the scene. Although the Doctor's description of Pink being killed by murderous wasps sounded bizarre, Gleave came to believe it once he saw wasps emerging from Pink's corpse during his autopsy, and became an ally of the Doctor in investigating the wasps.
