Publisher's summary[[edit] | [edit source]]
The UNIT team find themselves traveling through various epochs in Earth’s history. The only guide they have is working for the enemy, and the Vulpreen are hot on their heels. Help comes from a new friend, a young healer who already has a curious relationship with time.
Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]
Kate, Osgood, Josh and Jimmy arrive at Niagara Falls thousands of years in the past and find a recently-activated Vulpreen Arch through which Lorraine must have passed, but Josh and Jimmy are delayed from following Kate and Osgood through it by attacking Vulpreen.
The Arch leads to 1530 Montpellier where Kate and Osgood find Lorraine and Josh and Jimmy seek medical attention from Michel, an apothecary who is able to see the future. After Kate and Osgood find Josh and Jimmy, a time glitch moves them all forward in time several hours and the shop is attacked by a Vulpreen. Michel, whom Osgood realises is Nostradamus, takes Kate, Osgood, Josh and Jimmy to an Arch beneath the University of Montpellier through which they depart.
The Arch takes them to a small island during the Pacific War where Josh and Jimmy restrain Lorraine. Michel joins them to warn them of a Vulpreen following them and, after the Vulpreen is killed, the group search the island for another Arch and are again moved forwards in time by a glitch. They meet Kini, who says that she has remained on the island to protect its wildlife and whom Michel senses is hypnotised, and Kate and Josh chase Lorraine through an Arch to the Cambridge Botanic Garden when she gets free.
Before Lorraine can reach Missy, Kini appears and shoots her to prevent her from leading Kate and Josh to their mistress. Josh kills Kini and Lorraine, with her last breath, tells him and Kate to pass through one of six Arches and stop Missy before she can remotely destroy it. Osgood, Jimmy and Michel arrive at the Arches after Kate and Josh have gone and Michel senses that the remaining five Arches lead to snow, a party, Notre-Dame in 1530, a valley in the 2010s and somewhere full of Vulpreen. Whilst Michel returns home, Osgood and Jimmy head through the Arch to the valley.
In a cave, Kate and Jimmy see a woman emerge from another Arch. Kate warns Jimmy that he is about to meet a truly evil mastermind.
