Publisher's summary[[edit] | [edit source]]
Under Missy’s guiding hand, the Vulpreen are ready to strike out, to establish themselves as the new Masters of Time. UNIT's confrontation with Missy in the depths of Portugal's Douro Valley will decide the fate of not just the Earth but the whole Universe.
Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]
On a planet in the Andromeda galaxy, Missy holds Harry and Naomi in a stasis chamber and uses them as leverage to force Kate and Josh to disarm. She activates a biomagnetic field with her umbrella to restrain the two of them and claims that she intends to save the universe from the time glitches, caused by the Vulpreen's escape from the Void World. Before then, however, she plans to take control of the Vulpreen and use them to conquer the universe. Kate attracts the planet's carnivores with her blood to distract Missy, allowing her and Josh to escape through an Arch.
Osgood and Jimmy arrive in the Douro Valley and find that the area is full of hypnotised people and a Vulpreen army. They meet Hugo, a guide who hopes to save his wife and daughter, and go with him to a shelter before heading to Missy's villa where Kate has been recaptured by her and Varliss. Osgood runs into Josh and sends him and Jimmy to save Kate from Varliss whilst she and Hugo go to save Harry and Naomi from Missy, sneaking into her secret laboratory where she has been experimenting on Vulpreen to find their genetic code. Exploiting this genetic code, Missy kills Crastor through temporal obliteration.
Kate, Josh and Jimmy capture Varliss and take his flier, destroying a Super Arch before the flier is aged by an unusual storm and crashes. Varliss escapes and Osgood contacts Kate from the Andromeda galaxy, where she has saved Harry and Naomi and is holding Missy captive, and explains how Missy intends to kill the Vulpreen using the Super Arches and replace them with a race such as the Sontarans or Cybermen. Osgood shuts down Missy's systems to unleash the time storms upon the Vulpreen, prompting Varliss to send his people through the Super Arches which she has redirected to send them into no-space and no-time. Varliss is one of the few Vulpreen remaining on Earth and Kate invites him to talk with her.
Varliss rescues Missy in his ship and claims that he will destroy Earth with neutron torpedoes, but he reveals that he knows of Missy's deception and how she murdered Crastor and flies through a Super Arch to get his revenge on her. UNIT head back to the United Kingdom to use the Vulpreen control centres to remove the time bubbles and, some time later, Kate finds that Harry and Naomi have disappeared and that the Doctor has left behind a note explaining that they have joined him in the TARDIS.
