Herbert George Wells (18661946) was a British writer best known for his science fiction novels such as The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The Island of Doctor Moreau and The Time Machine, which was the first story to really popularize time travel, and was a direct influence on Doctor Who. He was a prolific writer in the history of literature, and wrote works in nearly every genre, including short stories and nonfiction. He was an outspoken socialist, and most of his works contain some notable political or social commentary.

During the events of Timelash, Wells encountered the Sixth Doctor in 1885 Scotland, and journeyed with him to the planet Karfel, where he helped the Doctor defeat the despotic Borad.

In The Ghosts of N-Space, the Third Doctor claimed to have lent Bertie Wells his ion-focusing coil for an invisibility experiment.
