Protestants were followers of Christianity (a religion that began on Earth) who split from the Catholic Church in the 16th century.
In 1554, Mary I of England enacted Heresy Laws against English Protestants, especially those who voiced support for her younger half-sister Elizabeth, who was herself a Protestant. Charles II died in 1685 and was succeeded his younger brother James II.
