- James Clerk Maxwell dies in Cambridge. His studies in electromagnetics greatly influenced Professor Waterfield's own experiments with static electricity ("The Evil of the Daleks").
- The events of "Tooth and Claw" occur at this time. The Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler encounter Queen Victoria, a group of warrior monks, and a werewolf at the Torchwood Estate in the highlands of Scotland. Victoria is inspired by the meeting to found what would become the Torchwood Institute.
