The Gospel of Matthew was Matthew the tax official's account of the life of Jesus Christ. Its thirteenth chapter contained the parable of the sower, which the Reverend Mr William Macksey commended to his Christmas Eve 1903 guest, Charles Torby, over an after-dinner glass of tawny port.
