Clara and the TARDIS was a Doctor Who mini-episode made exclusively for the series 7 DVD and Blu-ray box sets. It does not feature the Doctor, but rather focuses on Clara Oswald and her relationship with the TARDIS.

Plot

Clara Oswald gets into an argument with the TARDIS after the TARDIS plays a practical joke on her in the shower and then makes her bedroom disappear. After revealing to Clara that she is far from being the first girl the Doctor has "brought home", the TARDIS plays another trick on Clara that has her seeing double, and triple, and quadruple...

Cast

Continuity

  • Clara continues to be at odds with the TARDIS. (TV: The Rings of Akhaten, Hide)
  • The TARDIS, in response to Clara's statement asking if the TARDIS is upset because the Doctor has brought a girl home for the night, is shown images of a number of past companions (in this case: Ace, Martha Jones, Nyssa, Peri Brown, Romana I and Romana II, Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith and Amy Pond). Clara takes particular note of Amy's legs. The TARDIS previously gave a similar slide show to Amy herself, with Amy making a similar remark with regards to Leela. (HOMEVID: Meanwhile in the TARDIS)
  • Evidently, Clara never learns the identity of the woman with the legs as when she hears Amelia/Amy's name mentioned by the Doctor later (once in TV: The Time of the Doctor and again in TV: Deep Breath), she doesn't recognize it.
  • Ace and Nyssa are shown for the first time in the revived series.
  • As Clara is unaware of past companions prior to the TARDIS revealing them to her, this story has to take place prior to the events of TV: The Name of the Doctor.
  • Clara says that the TARDIS created a holographic leopard while she was in the bathroom. The TARDIS previously created a holographic voice interface of Clara to argue with Clara. (TV: Hide)
  • Despite the TARDIS earlier indicating that standard communication is impossible (TV: The Doctor's Wife), she is heard to express mood and even appears to laugh by way of beeping her console. She also responds directly to Clara commenting about the Doctor bringing girls around by showing Clara images of past companions.
  • Although several episodes in Series 7 and 8 indicate that Clara is not a full-time resident of the TARDIS, she does nonetheless have a bedroom aboard the TARDIS. (TV: The Crimson Horror, et al)
  • Once again, the Doctor is nowhere to be found as his companion beds down for the night. (TV: Bad Night) As this story appears to take place over at least several nights, his absence is unexplained.
  • The images used for the companions were originally publicity photos rather than intended in-universe material.

Story notes

  • This is the first and, to date, only filmed story set entirely within the TARDIS in which the Doctor does not appear in any form. It is also the first story in which a companion is featured but not the Doctor since the 1960s.
  • Erroneously described as a behind-the-scenes featurette in some pre-release press coverage of the box set.
  • All the images of the Doctor's past companions that appear on the TARDIS monitor are borrowed publicity photos that have been used for promotional material during those actors' respective eras.
