Abernathy was a London policeman who, with Dixon, captured the Sixth Doctor and William and brought them to Captain Angela Melocati. Abernathy and Captain Melocati couldn't see the alien worm that the Doctor had in a box because they were under the control of similar aliens. (PROSE: Certificate of Destruction)
