In July of 1543 the First Doctor and Susan Foreman ate dinner with King Henry VIII of England. During the course of the meal, the Doctor and Henry VIII quarrelled, resulting in the King losing his temper and throwing a parson's nose at him. The Doctor found his behaviour childish and doubted if he was mature enough to serve as a monarch. The fight prompted Henry VIII to have Susan and the Doctor thrown into the Tower of London, where the Doctor's TARDIS was located.

During the incarceration, the Doctor wrote a letter to King Henry to thank him for putting him in the tower. He claimed he intentially induced the King into throwing them into the Tower of London because the TARDIS was there, and that they would be long gone by the time he read the letter. He also complained that the amenities in the tower of London were antiquated, even for the 16th century. The letter was not delivered to King Henry VIII until October 1543, by which time the Doctor, the Susan and their "large blue cabinet" had indeed vanished from the locked cell. (PROSE: The Time Lord Letters) The Doctor later recalled the event to Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright when they reminisced about their adventures since they joined him. (TV: The Sensorites)
