BAME
The BAME acronym was used in the recent Lucy Wilson short story 8.46, though without an explanation of what it stands for (Black Asian Minority Ethnic). I am unsure as to whether or not the acronym should just be included here or if it needs a page of its own. Any thoughts? WaltK ☎ 21:23, July 14, 2020 (UTC)
- Strictly speaking (as I understand it--note I am not a member of either), BAME is specific to the British experience of living as a person of colour / non-white person, whereas POC is North American in origin (though seemingly gaining traction over the years in the UK as well, at least online). I don't think the British-American divide here is analogous to other cases where T:BRENG favours British usage when it comes to items, as both terms come out of social relations (not merely different terms for one material thing), which themselves differ between those regions.
- So we have all the information to work from, though, what's the context for the usage in 8.46, and are the terms directly linked in the DWU?

Nobody deserved to be brutalised because of their skin colour, did they? [Lucy] didn't really know any police beyond Hobo's mum, but she wasn't blind to the many videos on social media that showed horrific acts of violence against BAME people.
You may indeed by right about it being an exclusively British term, as this Metro article seems to indicate (the stuff about it being a lazy and harmful term that lumps all "non-whites" together is also pretty intriguing). WaltK ☎ 14:02, July 15, 2020 (UTC)
