Kan-Chow

Kan-Chow was an ancient city in Cathay, near Su-Chow. It was located near the of the beginning of the western side of the Great Wall of Cathay. (TV: "The Wall of Lies") The city was renowned throughout Cathay, in the 13th centur, for its cooking. (PROSE: Marco Polo)

In 1289, the First Doctor, Susan, Barbara, and Ian visited Su-Chow, having also most recently journeyed through Su-Chow with Marco Polo, on their journey to the court of Kublai Khan. (TV: "The Wall of Lies") They stayed in a way station in the city. (PROSE: Marco Polo)

Their next stop would be Lan-Chow, in the south. (TV: "The Wall of Lies")

Behind the scenes

The journey through Kan-Chow was only mentioned in Marco Polo's narration. As such, Kan-Chow is never actually seen in the serial itself. In the novelisation it played a more vital part, with a completely original chapter called "Too Many Kan-Chow Cooks" set in the city.
Kan-Chow (modern spelling Ganzhou) is now known as Zhangye in the real world.
