Data-scans were a source for information.

The Fourth Doctor once cited one when a computer asked him about the disadvantages of Australia, in which there were apparently none. However, the computer new of a newer data-scan, which revealed that Australia was dirty, littered, and was about to have its life-support systems fail due to pollution.
