LEGO Webcasts[[edit source]]

The LEGO Webcasts are as non-canon as The Time Travellers, as such, they should not have a page GarfielfStuff 14:56, February 24, 2019 (UTC)

First, please not that, as far as this wiki is concerned, Doctor Who and its related programmes have no canon. So, what we do judge is wheather stories are Valid sources. Stories get pages for them as long as they are licensed, which this webcast is. OncomingStorm12th 15:07, February 24, 2019 (UTC)

Admin note[[edit source]]

Not only was User:GarfielfStuff incorrect about the Wiki's treatment of "canon" and about the issue of whether "non-canonical" (read: invalid) stories should have pages, but they were also incorrect about the invalidity of "the LEGO Webcasts".

As User:Epsilon the Eternal alerted me to on my talk page, this page was created with a provisional invalid tag by an anonymous user way back when; it has never actually been ruled invalid. LEGO Dimensions itself has been ruled invalid, and this is likely why the issue hasn't been revisited since then. But as highlighted by User:SOTO at Thread:212365:

Referencing a past story which we call invalid does not on its own make the new source invalid. However, any evidence that problems with the "original" apply just as well to the story that calls back to it will most likely mean it'd meet the same fate.SOTO

Looking back at the LEGO Dimensions decision, community consensus was that the game passed Rule 4… it just didn't pass Rule 1, quite, because it's a video game with some "branching" elements to its storyline. Supergirl Meets E.T., on the other hand, is an animated cartoon for which these concerns do not apply.

It is also hard to argue that it relies on the narrative context of LEGO Dimensions when the bulk of the webcast consists of Supergirl going over who she is and who E.T. is. Indeed, as this webcast was released before the video game itself, it's hard to take seriously any argument that it needs the video game's narrative background to make sense.

I don't imagine Supergirl Meets E.T. is very high on anybody's list of canonical DW story, if indeed, any of you mentally maintain such a list. Nor is it a terribly important footnote in Doctor Who history. But if we're going to have a page about it (and we should), then there's currently no policy reason whatsoever for it to be invalid.

Long story short, I'm removing the gag.

Note however two things:

  • As the issue here is that this story never had an inclusion debate, then once we have forums again, it would not constitute a breach of T:POINT to open a new debate on the subject (so long as it doesn't retread the Rule 4 arguments covered quite thoroughly by the LEGO Dimensions thread, anyhow).
  • For reasons I'll expound upon at Talk:Doctor, Doctor, Doctor (webcast), the same treatment will not be given to Doctor, Doctor, Doctor, even though there were calls for that story to be revalidated as well.

Cheers to anyone who took the time to read this!--Scrooge MacDuck 00:28, October 22, 2020 (UTC)

While nothing should be started before the forums are moved, I note that OS25 explicitly compared this story to Dr Who and the Turgids (comic story) in Thread:211485, so either this story or that one should be discussed at some point. Najawin 05:30, October 22, 2020 (UTC)
With respect, User:OttselSpy25 isn't an admin.
In the same breath as he claims Supergirl Meets E.T. should be invalidated by allegedly being a commercial, OS25 also says Doctor, Doctor, Doctor has nothing to weigh it down and should clearly be a valid source. Even though, as I noted on that talk page, "trailer" is right there in the title of the DDD YouTube upload.
Which is to say that it's hard to put much credit in the "research" undertaken in that particular forum post. (This isn't meant as a knock on OS25's general contributions to the Forums at all, just that 2017 post in particular!)
Nowhere in the YouTube description, or the video itself, is Supergirl Meets E.T. called a "commercial" or even a "trailer". Unlike Turgids or, say, NOTVALID: What's inside the Doctor Who LEGO set?, it's also not about the Twelfth Doctor and Supergirl playing the actual video game somehow, or any such thing. Instead, it's a little narrative webcast featuring a few of the characters from the game just being themselves, serving as a bit of an introduction to them and to the sort of hijinks they'll get up to in the crossover. We have a word for those kinds of things: they're called prequels.
NOTVALID: Dr Who and the Turgids should not have a thread opened about it, on the basis of this or anything else (unless the Wiki ever changes its policies on narrative commercials). --Scrooge MacDuck 09:59, October 22, 2020 (UTC)

Springfield & other locations[[edit source]]

Should it be noted that E.T. "once visited" certain locations such as Springfield, due to their appearance in this video? While the appearance of these locations in NOTVALID: LEGO Dimensions is, naturally, not particularly noteworthy, this is an appearance in a valid source. Cookieboy 2005 11:41, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

(for now, I'll assume it to count as part of the narrative, as various parts are referenced in dialogue by Supergirl) Cookieboy 2005 13:07, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
