Comics are about both their scripts and their art. And visually there is an awful lot of case to believe that something is "off", because the tribe doesn't look like other, normal people in the strip. They have gold light streaming from their eyes. That means something. You can't view the parts that have the tribe in isolation from those parts that don't. Part one explains the psi-metal "effect" which looks exactly like what's happening to the tribe. And it's in the name: psi-metal. Metal that responds to and takes form from thought and memory.
